The Great Bifurcation: It’s already here and what to do about it

When was the moment you realise AI is better than you at your own job?

Maybe you watched AI write a block of code faster than you can think. Maybe you saw a strategy drafted in seconds that would have taken you a week to sweat over.

Maybe you saw 6 months of accurate literature reviews, writing and synthesis done in 25 minutes. I’m calling the ability to notice this and do something about it  the “Great Bifurcation”. We are witnessing the defining economic split of our species.

A divergence is happening right now or about to happen: a small percentage will evolve into something exponentially more productive, while the vast majority face obsolescence.

The Awareness-Timing MatrixThink of this as a 2×2 grid. Where do you sit on the timeline of the takeover, and, more importantly, do you even realise it’s happening?

1. The 10x Architect (The Superhuman)

You realised AI beats you. So, you stopped competing and started conducting. You are currently multiplying your output by 10x. This will grow further.

2. The Prepper (The Strategist)

You see the tsunami. You are ruthlessly upskilling, reorganising your workflow to become an “Architect” before the wave hits.

3. The Sleepwalker (The Withered)

AI is already better than you, but you’re in denial. You’re performing “busy work” that has less economic value. You are technologically a “dead man walking”.

4. The Blindsided (The Victim)

You think your job is “too human” or “too creative” for software. When the capability jump happens, you will be left without a chair when the music stops. The Great Bifurcation: The 10% vs. The 90%. This is not a gentle process. No, this is a cliff.

5. The minority (The Superhumans) act as directors.

They treat AI as an infinite intern army. A single individual eventually produces the output of a 100-person corporation, detaching from the labour market entirely. They aren’t labourers anymore; they own a digital means of production.

Then there is the majority (The Withered). They will continue to offer skills that are no longer scarce. They won’t be fired immediately, but they will slowly be pushed to the margins of relevance as their utility drops to zero.

The Politics of Envy. When 90% of the population realises they can’t compete, they will turn to the only lever of power left: Democracy. We are heading toward a “Let’s Get Poor Together” phase. The majority will vote to aggressively tax or handicap the Superhumans. We risk a decade of functioning socialism where the goal isn’t growth, but the equal sharing of misery.

The Evolution

Eventually, the system breaks and resets. The “Envy” model can’t compete with societies that embrace the Superhumans.Once the dust settles, we hit Post-Scarcity. The cost of goods drives to near zero. We move from a “Job Economy” to a “Human Economy.” Value won’t be about what you can do (robots do that), but who you are and what you create for the sake of creation. We stand on the edge of unlocking science and technology that will seem like magic to us.

This age will bring additional social, philosophical and most definitely health challenges. But it will happen, and abundance will be real. There will certainly be social inequality. Hopefully abundance does roll down. This will be a challenge of a functioning welfare state which helps people be the best they can be and giving them a hand up, not those pulling those which are doing well down. That will be the challenge and reality of the next chapter for humanity.

The Bottom Line

This is coming. You cannot stop the bifurcation, but you have a choice to make right now. Will you be the Architect who builds the future, or the voter who tries to ban it? And let’s not do a decade of socialism before we realise that the only way forward is to embrace our superpowers.
